greetings everyone and happy holidays!

well, as we found out last night, the space is pretty inhospitable for yoga this evening (which is a good thing to be under construction!) so we will reconnect after the new year for our weekly gatherings. stay tuned for date and time.

all the best for a very merry christmas and wonderful new year!

in love,
leah

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 13, 2007

Welcome Kali Yuga Yoga To The Historic East End
Nashville’s Premiere Yoga Therapy Studio

Leah Lillios, founder of Kali Yuga Yoga, joyously announces the purchase of her future yoga studio space at Martin Corner in the 37206 building in Historic East Nashville. The near 900 square foot space on Fatherland Avenue will house a 600 square foot studio hosting a variety of yoga classes including, but not limited to Vinyasa (Flow), Restorative Yoga and Barkan Method Hot Yoga.

“I’m very excited to share my passion for yoga and educate others about its healing benefits here in the East End” said Lillios. “The studio is a perfect opportunity to grow our yoga community and East Nashville is such a great neighborhood as well.”

At Kali Yuga Yoga practitioners will utilize yoga as therapy to cleanse all three parts of the physical body including tissues of the bones and muscles, mindset of the brain and nervous system and emotions of the heart. Through various styles each session will incorporate asanas or physical poses to heal the body from the inside out allowing one to function at an optimal efficiency level. Classes will adjust to all students challenging intermediate practitioners and enlightening beginners as they commence their yoga journey.

The studio’s director, Leah Lillios, is a trained modern dancer and has been practicing yoga for over eight years. With concentrations in Vinyasa, Restorative and Barkan Method Hot Yoga, Leah became a Certified Instructor and Registered Yoga Teacher through Jimmy Barkan's Yoga College Of India in Ft.Lauderdale, Florida. She recently moved to Nashville and has been teaching at local studios and at the Cool Springs YMCA for the past five years. Currently she instructs at the Magnolia Day Spa in East Nashville and serves as President of the Kali Yuga Yoga Club.

Lessons are slated to begin Monday, January 8, 2007 with a Grand Opening planned for later in the month.

ONE MORE REASON.....
brought to you by sparkpeople.com

Yoga Body Bliss

A new study published by the University of California at Berkeley shows that women who practice yoga have better body images and less disordered eating patterns than women who take part in traditional aerobic exercises. Study participants filled out surveys about the type of exercise they performed, how often, and their feelings about their bodies.

Action Sparked: This particular study didn't put women into different exercise groups, so researchers can't be sure whether women who already felt good about their bodies tended to steer towards yoga, or if the yoga itself helped improve body image. However, yoga, a mind-body exercise, allows practitioners to tune into their bodies, emphasizing their strengths and abilities, not their size or appearance.

This focused practice is also a great stress-reliever. Yoga could help many individuals (not exclusively women) focus on the positives of their bodies, thus improving how you feel about your body, while helping improve flexibility, strength, and mental focus in the process.

Exercise Extra: Yoga is a great addition to a well-rounded fitness program. Yoga can help increase flexibility, reduce stress, and build endurance.

Not much puts more stress on your relationships than the enforced gaiety of the holiday season. Here are the ABC’s of Morgana Rea’s All-Purpose Relationship Remedy for this and all occasions brought to you by Findbliss.com:

A is for Appreciation.
Appreciation sweetens any relationship, and it’s not contingent on the other person’s behavior. Use it like a circuit breaker to interrupt negative interactions. (We interrupt this regularly scheduled unhappiness to focus on the positive.) Take a moment to say to your partner, “What I appreciate about you is…” and fill in the rest.

B is for Boundaries.
This is a no victim zone. You are responsible for your life and how you allow yourself to be treated. Strong boundaries are present when you can say yes to what you want and no to what you don’t want without apology. You aren’t rescuing or demanding rescue. You respect others and you respect yourself.

C is for Commitment.
Commitment is simple: you can count on me. You can’t control other people, but you can choose who you will be in a relationship. Your commitment creates trust in yourself and within the relationship, and it gives you the power to be pro-active instead of reactive.

It’s really all about you. Only you can practice your ABC’s. ENJOY the holidays!!!!!!

Namaste ya'll!

thanks so much for understanding the class cancellation last week. i apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your thoughts and heart~

well, it seems the summer has taken its toll and left many of us broken and a bit battered- popped shoulders, bum toes, hip catches and the like... i even have suffered a twisted ankle as of late! so at the request of many we will be holding a deep stretch and release class tomorrow, Wed 10/18, 6PM here at the house. the weather has been a bit crazy (typical vata fall) so come rain or shine- just be sure to bring some extra layers in case the weather permits an outside practice. but i'll hold the lounge and dining room open just in case...

looking forward to another great evening!
shanti ananda,
Leah

What is Kali Yuga Anyway?????

According to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, “Kali Yuga (lit. Age of Kali, also known as Iron Age), is one of the four stages of development that the world goes through as part of the cycle of Yugas, as described in Hindu scriptures. The other Yugas are Dwapara Yuga, Treta Yuga, and Satya Yuga. According to the Surya Siddhanta, an astronomical treatise that forms the basis of all Hindu and Buddhist calendars, Kali Yuga began at midnight (00:00) on 18 February 3102 BCE in the proleptic Julian calendar or 23 January 3102 BCE in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, which is also considered by many Hindus to be the time that Krishna left his body (In Hindu belief, avatars don't die).

Most interpretations of Hindu scriptures believe that earth is currently in Kali Yuga. However, other interpretations of the same scriptures believe that earth is now at the beginning of Dwapara Yuga. Throughout the Kali Yuga, Hindus believe that human civilization degenerates spiritually. Kali Yuga is sometimes referred to as the Dark age (Iron Age), mainly because people are the furthest possible from God.

Hindus generally consider morality to be comparable to a bull. In the Satya Yuga the bull had four legs, and in each age morality reduced by a quarter. By the age of Kali, morality will be reduced to only a quarter to that of the golden age. Thus, the bull will only have one leg. Morality will wait on men.

Kali Yuga should not be confused with the goddess Kali, as they are unrelated words in the Sanskrit language. The "kali" of Kali Yuga means "terrible," whereas the goddess "Kali" is the feminine form of "Kala," which means "time." Though, it is believed that Kali is the one that governs this age.”

Instructions For Life...
Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
Follow the three R’s: Respect for self, Respect for others and Responsibility for all your actions.
Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
Don’t let a little dispute injure a great relationship.
When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
Spend some time alone every day.
Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.
A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.
Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.
Be gentle with the earth.
Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

A Beautiful Bridge... Here's John Christian in a variation of Dhanurasana~ Gorgeous!!

See you next Wed, 8/30, at 6PM!
Refreshments to follow- Long Hungry Creek Farm watermelon and homemade lemonade.

~SHANTI ANANDA OM~
What's Your Style??
new to yoga and don't know where to go? here's a simple decoder of the most popular schools to help guide you along your yoga path....

SIVANANDA
- one of my favorites! we have an ashram very close to nashville and i spend a lot of my weekends retreating there. i believe it to be the most pure, most spiritual and simplisitic style in the west today. a sivananda class is very demanding physically (they'll get you into a head stand in no time flat) but with a heavy stress on mediation, breathing, and relaxation. i def feel like i've been to church after class.
http://sivananda.org/

BIKRAM/ HOT YOGA- LOVE IT!!!!! its HOT in the room 98- 104. a bikram class has a set series of poses (26) and a set script for the instructor. the heat allows your muscles to stay warm and open to maximize stretching potential. also the heat pushes your physical systems to their max to clean out all areas of blockage ie) toxic matter. there's nothing like a bikram class to clean you out and get your body working at an optimal level, but it can also be very stressful- particularly if you run warm and don't enjoy the heat.
http://barkanmethod.com
bikram, being jimmy's teacher brought the style to the west.
http://www.bikramyoga.com/

VINYASA/ ASHTANGA
- most popular form of yoga in the west. vinyasa means flow, so the classes (depending on the level) will be pretty quick paced with poses linked together as combinations- most often using a sun salutation between sets. poses vary, depending on what part of the body is being worked that particular class. now- ashtanga is a flow class that has a set series of poses and levels that will be basically the same each class time. if you're looking for an active class- vinyasa rocks. at a mature studio there will be a beginning meditation which will help set the tone and the rhythm of your breath for the rest of your practice.

http://www.ayri.org/

IYENGAR/ HATHA- this is a more traditional form of yoga, being slow paced and uses props extensively. in some iyengar classes you may spend half of the class doing introductory poses to a particular back bend only to practice the backbend at the end of class once. Iyengar can be pretty technical, but its a great way to learn poses.
http://www.bksiyengar.com/

ANUSARA- the newest and latest craze. anusara is an even paced yoga class focusing on the heart as propelling force of every pose. i've only ever been to one anusara and it had a heavy focus on alignment, but was a v. interesting perspective.
http://www.anusara.com/

i think your best bet is to get out to a beginner class or two and try them out. every studio has its own purpose within each style. so its a trial and error mission. hopefully there's a few studios either near your house or your work that will proove beneficial and convenient and usually your first class is free. do some web lookin' and be sure and tell me what you discover~ feel free to contact me with any questions~ kaliyugayogaclub@yahoo.com
